Listen, Live and Learn Coordinator and Residence Head Senior Living Environment 7 views

Stellenbosch University - Stellenbosch, Western Cape - The Listen, Live and Learn initiative (LLL) is senior student housing with the aim of exposing students to a diversity of thinking styles. It is the primary belief of the Centre for Student Communities that students’ learning and living environments should be integrated and should not function separately. The Centre for Student Structures Communities functions according to a value driven system. LLL is an experiential model where senior students are placed in a house - ideally a small diverse group of students from different faculties, genders, races and backgrounds. Each house adopts a theme for the year. Students are hereby exposed to the other different ways of thinking, living and a variety of experiences. The house hosts twelve conversations around their theme inviting outsiders (ranging from academics, students to experts). These houses model living together in the modern South Africa and serves as a vital platform for intellectual discourse between people with different viewpoints. LLL forms a student community in which community principles are applied to integrate students academic and living environments. The social dimension of community life in the houses, as well as the intellectual discourse being conducted, is harnessed to support the Universitys academic mission. In so doing, one of the Universitys objectives is pursued, namely to provide students with a university experience in which the house is an extension of academic life in the faculties; to establish a university environment that would create a well-rounded education experience for students, in line with the Strategic Framework and the profile of SU graduates. The LLL initiative is aimed at building a student culture that promotes student success; a culture in which students not only have pleasant social experiences, but are also serious about being effective role players within and beyond South African borders.
